2017 Audi A3 vs. 2017 Volkswagen Jetta

When considering to buy luxury sedans, car enthusiasts today have many more options compared to the past. However, one common trend you will find is that in most cases, German marques tend to offer the best in build quality and luxury. The 2017 Audi A3 and the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta are examples of these. However, when comparing these two, you will quickly come to realize that the Audi actually has more to offer compared to the Volkswagen, and is therefore the car you should buy. This review enumerates the ways in which the Audi is better than the Volkswagen Jetta.

Design & Style

The Volkswagen Jetta features more plain styling compared to the Audi, which is something that car enthusiasts will quickly notice. The minimal straight lines and angles on the Audi give it a sharp, formal look. The Jetta, however, can be confused with so many cars out there, since it has a generic design for this age. One of the consequences of this conservative styling is that one may not feel like they are driving a new vehicle; it simply looks like it’s from the past.

In the interior, the story is the same. The Volkswagen Jetta has decent interior and the materials used are good enough, but the way in which they are put together leaves a lot to be desired. When you step into an A3, you instantly get the premium quality of the workmanship and the materials, and you will actually appreciate being in one. This can’t be said for the Jetta.

Technology & Safety

The 2017 Audi A3 has a slight edge over the Volkswagen Jetta when it comes to technology and safety features. The headline tech feature in the Audi A3 is the “Virtual Cockpit” layout of the interior. This comprises a 12.3 inch screen rather than an instrument cluster for the driver. This displays all kinds of information such as navigation and car information. In addition to that, the vehicle also has a dash-mounted 7-inch instrument panel screen with an excellent interface, and with new features such as voice command and easy smartphone integration. Safety features include multiple airbags, an anti-whiplash system, pre-tensioners and an advanced security system.

The Jetta is far more basic, and makes do with minimal technological features such as a basic satellite navigation system. It also has standard safety features which include ABS, driver and passenger airbags and traction control.

In terms of performance, the Volkswagen Jetta ships with a Gasoline direct injection engine which produces 150 horsepower from a 1.4-liter engine. The Audi produces more power (204 horsepower) from an engine of a similar size. Both are intercooled and turbocharged.

The Bottom Line

The Volkswagen Jetta is an undoubtedly well-made car, and most who buy it don’t end up regretting doing so. However, when you compare it with the Audi A3, it’s easy to see that the Audi is so much better on many fronts. It therefore only makes sense that one would choose the Audi over the Volkswagen.
