2017 Audi A3 vs. 2017 Honda Accord

When it comes to reliably made cars, you can turn to Honda as they produce best sellers for the road and this year's 2017 Honda Accord is another good car. However, where Honda create roadworthy cars, Audi goes that step further by adding luxury to its attributes and at Classic Audi, we believe the 2017 Audi A3 leaves the 2017 Honda Accord behind.

Design & Style

The bite-size 2017 Audi A3 looks sleek and handsome with its finely polished fit and finish and is slowly catching up to the more expensive models sitting behind the prestigious four circles badge. This time round the designers have reshaped the front grille, making it single frame which gives it a sharper look.

The A3's lights have also been tinkered with, and Audi has created thinner LEDs that gives this A3 the illusion of looking like an expensive version of its big brother. Honda's designers appear to have concentrated more on the inside than the outside of the car, so not much has changed style-wise. More LED lights have been added up the front end while the bodywork has chrome highlights on the front, sides, and rear.

Inside the Honda Accord they have ramped the driving experience up with a multimedia system operated by a touchscreen while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available meaning you can control some of your apps from the screen. Audi though blows the competition away with their 'Virtual Cockpit' consisting of an optional 12.3-inch TFT screen that switches between the 'classic' display of speedometer and rev monitor (all in digital) and the infotainment mode with its satellite navigation map taking precedence over the display.

With voice command functionality, it makes driving more relaxing and not a chore. Add to that the leather three-spoke racing designed steering wheel and a massage function in your seat and you won't even want to try the Honda out.

Technology & Safety

Safety systems in cars is a significant part of the purchasing process, and like other cars of its type the Accord has blind-spot monitoring coupled with lane-keep assist and a warning when you depart from your lane unintentionally. Forward-collision warning is also part of the Accord's safety features making this a safe car to drive in. Standard amounts of front and side airbags are fitted throughout.

The Audi A3 goes just that bit better, and this is what you get when you purchase German cars. One outstanding safety feature is the Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) that controls the car's speed to the traffic conditions ahead of it. If cars are slowing down, the TJA will slow down too and when the flow of traffic speeds up the car will accelerate. If the driver of the car appears incapacitated, then the 2017 Audi A3 will slow down to a gentle halt.

Performance

The 2017 Audi A3 2.0-liter turbo is coupled with Quattro all-wheel drive and six-speed dual-clutch transmission, which produces more torque than the Honda. The A3 makes 186 horsepower while the Accord lags just behind at 185hp. The A3's turbocharged engine makes the car feel more responsive when you are driving it and truly punches above its weight when compared to the Honda Accord. Handling wise the Audi A3 is smooth and easily manageable, and you can change the Drive Select Mode to Comfort which makes the driving experience even more comfortable. The Honda Accord is a competent car and also offers a good driving experience, but it has the tendency to ride a tad sharp when you are driving at higher speeds.

The Bottom Line

Overall the 2017 Audi A3 outdoes its rival in nearly every area, making it more value for its cost. It looks and performs like a bigger car with less of a price tag. Inside the A3 it is the Virtual Cockpit that makes a huge difference with its multiple functions and features where the Honda Accord is more about audio streaming and music. The A3 looks sexier, more powerful and sporty on the outside and the driving experience is greater than the Accord.
