2016 Audi A3 Sportback vs. 2016 BMW 1-Series

You know you are investing in excellence when you purchase a car with a prestigious German badge and both the Audi A3 Sportback and BMW 1-Series 2016 models have a ton of new technology, sexy styling, and power in their revised engines. If you are looking for a smart car, then Classic Audi gives the edge to the Audi A3 Sportback, and you can find out why here.

Design & Style

Both models look sleek with the A3 benefiting from sharper lines while the BMW 1 Series appears more muscular. Don't be fooled though as it isn't as well proportioned as the Audi's front end which has revised, its xenon headlights making them more angular and increased its grille size, giving it a sexier look than its more bland BMW counterpart.

The A3 interior is impeccably finished with leather upholstery while the biggest difference is its driver cockpit which makes the car appear more expensive than it is. The A3 leather steering wheel design is more sporty than the BMW's traditional round shape, yet it is the Virtual Cockpit that beats the BMW hands down. The LCD screen has transformed the way we look at our speed and engine revs as it is purely in digital format and switches easily to satellite navigation. If ride comfort is important to you, the BMW 1-Series copes with most bumps and potholes, but the A3 is still smoother. Not a major issue but you may find the BMW's seat controls a touch hard to get used to. The BMW's interior is by no means hopeless, but it just cannot stand up to its rival.

Technology & Safety

Traffic Jam Assist technology is now onboard the A3, allowing the vehicle to slow in traffic then accelerate and drive to conditions while its pre sense front system monitors the road for other vehicles when moving faster and pedestrians when moving slower; Action is then taken to avoid collisions. If the driver falls asleep at the wheel or becomes unconscious the car will stop on its own accord. The BMW is fitted with a stability control system for control in extreme conditions and has seven airbags and a driver's knee bag. However, it is falling behind as it does not have automatic emergency braking.

The 2016 Audi A3 has a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 187 horsepower. It has S-Tronic twin-clutch automatic gearbox. The BMW 1-Series 2.0 liter turbocharged engine produces 186 hp, so it just loses out on power. For proper handling, the 1-Series offers up rear-wheel driving although the suspension leans more to the firm side of the comfort spectrum. The A3 is a great little all-rounder that offers stability and balance and is the perfect companion for long journeys.

The Bottom Line

The 2016 Audi A3 offers more for your money than the BMW 1-Series and feels and looks more expensive than it is. The features that it possesses that the BMW does not - the virtual driver cockpit for instance - gives this car the overall winning prestige factor and should be your choice in the premium hatchback market. From the cutting edge interior, the ability to hold more luggage than the BMW  1-Series, a smooth and seamless drive and a prestigious car manufacturer makes the A3 your go-to car for all round performance.
